This included, for example, workers’ control of produc tion (as distinct from mere ‘representation’ on phoney factory councils); greater popular control of government, through referenda and ‘direct action against bureaucracy’; ‘democratisation of the mass media’; an end to élitism by drastic reform of the educational system; and — in general — ‘power to the people’ in every available form, which naturally entails a somewhat revised concept of political leadership (‘rather more in the moses tradition’) aiming ‘to create the conditions that will allow the people to do it themselves’. The statesman concluded its broodings by saying: ‘unless a totally new line of thinking, a totally new defiance of myths and illusions, and a totally new determination are grafted on to the ageing frame o f the labour party, that will be the end of that’.

and ben, though hip, becomes a meaningless unexplainable set of respones, a sealed-off symptom with no explanations, because cassavetes did not understand that you cannot be hip without living hip, that you cannot assume hip like the latest in pose or attitude, that hip is a language, a rhythm, a way of life that springs out of action, out of the doing. ben’s repetition of tony’s words both intensifies and mocks what tony says, and the slow smile on ben’s face, that builds as he closes the door until it bursts into humor as he turns toward his brother, releases the tension that has flickered in them in their contempt for tony’s posturing.

Vietnam

the viet minh the french attempt to re-establish their colonial power over the next 84 years revealed two things; the pre-eminence of the viet minh as leaders of the anti-colonial struggle and the strengthening of the viet minh despite all attempts by the french to subvert their political support by military means. by continuing the war they risked losing the considerable economic interests they still had in vietnam, particularly direct investment, while in europe the pressures for german re-armament and capital for the re-building of the french economy made the continuation of war in vietnam even less of a priority, the french therefore agreed with britain that indo-china should be put on the agenda of the geneva conference along with korea.

The long term moral aspirations of marx, of professor ginsberg, of hobhouse, and one might add, of adam smith, all fall within approximately the same range; a social science making possible the rational control of the environment is a moral demand central to them all; all too share the emphasis on individual responsibility and development, the "leap from the realm of necessity to the realm of freedom", which is designated by professor ginsberg in the idea of "self-direction". What mr. lowenthal is anxious to prove is that not merely considerations of defence against russian aggression require the preservation of the alliance between britain and the united states, but that in being opposed to soviet communism the labour party must be committed to a close association with american capitalism.

in the women’s movement, the ‘more-feminist-than-thou’ accusation that lesbian separatism has directed at hetero sexual women has caused many women to collude with essen a seventh demand at the south west regional women’s liberation conference in january, a workshop was introduced jointly by members of bristol women’s aid and anti-rape group. Sexuality is politics at its most general; sexual oppres sion, including violence, is perpetuated through pervasive social practices, pre-rational, ‘common-sense’ notions which assume certain ‘natural’ dynamics in social relationships between men and women, although of course it is reinforced by laws and state institutions.

Abortion

Since then the women’s abortion and contracep tive campaign (wacc) and the women’s right to choose campaign (wrtc) of the abortion law reform associa tion (alra) have also affiliated. the anti-abortionists’ argument, posed both in the emo tive terms relating to abuses of the nhs and the 1967 act, is pervaded by the notion that women don’t know their own minds: ‘the pro-abortionists speak of women’s rights; the anti-abortionists of women’s needs’.

Although it seems ironic that the programme does not include any of the newsreel films on community politics or black peoples struggle (for instance ‘the young lords’, ‘the black panthers’, ‘community control’, ‘child care: people’s liberation’, ‘high school rising’, ‘the meat co-op’) the films are certainly worth seeing as represen tative of important aspects of what newsreel stands for.

On the ruins of fascist west germany the americans built a state that would stand firm in the front line of the cold war: the socialist and communist lefts were harassed and disqualified by the us occupation forces; the bruised but still vital bourgeoisie were given huge sums of money (marshall aid) and encouraged to create a new set of conservative political institutions (the christian democrats); and many old nazis were kept in office to serve their new continued on page 4 15 march 1972 might argue wouldn’t be won.

mao’s political practice too was based both on a general economic analysis of china’s position as a semi-feudal, semi-colonial country but also on an insistence on analysis of each specific situation in its concrete conditions, understanding “what specific position each aspect of a contradiction occupies, what concrete forms it assumes in its interdependence and in its contradiction with its opposite, and what concrete methods are em ployed in the struggle with its opposite, when the two are both interdependent and in contradiction, and also after the interdependence breaks down. In 1914, when he was asked to write an encyclopaedia article on marx, lenin read hegel’s logic and noted: “aphorism: it is impossible completely to understand marx’s capital, and especially its first chapter, without having thoroughly studied and understood the whole of hegel’s logic. ”
